The opening of the buildings of the Dormition of the Mother of God Monastery and the Trinity Church of the John the Baptist Monastery were opened after renovation and restoration in Sviyazhsk, Tatarstan on September 3.
Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, Russian Transport Minister Igor Levitin, Tatarstan State Counsellor Mintimer Shaimiev, Prime Minister Ildar Khalikov and ministers and heads of agencies as well as residents of the island attended the ceremony,
The Trinity church is the only monument of the old wooden architecture of the 17th century in the Volga region. The church was the first Orthodox temple of the first temple in the entire Middle and Low Volga region.
It was consecrated on May 17, 1551.
“It is just the beginning; in a year the restored temples will look the proper way and tourists and pilgrims will start to come here to touch the world of religion that we have managed to keep preserved in Tatarstan,” Archbishop of Kazan and Tatarstan Anastasy said at the opening.
“Sviyazhsk will be one of the most beautiful places in Russia; we’ll be proud that Tatarstan has such an Orthodox sacred place. We still have a lot to do,” Rustam Minnikhanov said.
