Winners and participants of the Universiade-2009 were honored in Kazan

October 25, the participants and winners of the XXV World Summer Universiade 2009 in Belgrade were honored in Kazan Palace of Combats in the course of the final races of the Decade of University Sports in the Republic of Tatarstan.

So called ‘Student starts’ (competition of the participants of the Decade of University Sports) has become the final event in the program of the first All Russian forum ‘Russia – Country of Sports’. Tatarstan Deputy Minister of Youth, Sport and Tourism Halil Shaikhutdinov, Russian State Duma Deputies Ildar Gilmutdinov and Viktoria Cherkesova, chairman of youth physical culture and sport society ‘Burevestnik’ Emir Kharisov took part in the awarding ceremony.

Tatarstan sportsmen won 6 awards at the Universiade in Belgrade. Preparation for the Games was held under the patronage of the President of Tatarstan. Two Gold Medals won tennis player Ksenia Lykina; the first one is for the victory in the women's singles titles and the second one – for the first place in the team standings. Nadezhda Sozontova won silver medal in team relay race 4x400 meters. Epee fencer Yelena Shasharina, athlete Tatyana Shutova took the second places. UNICS players Alexei Zhukanenko and Eugeny Voronov won silver medals in men’s basketball tournament.

According to Khalil Shaikhutdinov, Tatarstan participants and winners of the Belgrade Universiade received monetary prizes of 10-100 thousand roubles.
