The opening of the 13th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum with participation of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev was held at the exhibition complex Lenexpo in St. Petersburg on June 5. Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaimiev leads the republican delegation at the forum.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Russian President said this forum is special. It is being held in the most dramatic period of the world economic development. Most experts believe we are on the peak of the crisis, in the middle of the deepest recession over the recent decades. “This crisis will undoubtedly result in world reformatting. I think it is evident for all those present here,” Dmitry Medvedev said. “As a result, leaders of economic development, patterns of behaviour in economic sphere, functioning models of economic markets themselves will change.”

June the 5th was proclaimed the economic day at the forum. The opening ceremony of the forum was followed by the plenary session “Global economic crisis: first lessons and leading the way forward” attended by the Tatarstan President. The participants of the session focused on the following questions: What lessons should individual countries and the global economy as a whole learn from the global crisis? How should the global economic system evolve in order to build sustainable national economies? What steps should be taken by national governments? How should the system of global governance institutions evolve to avoid similar crises in the future? Where is the borderline between the responsibility of national governments and the concerted action of all countries in the world? What problems are still overlooked but may emerge in the near future?
