Day of Slavic Written Language and Culture held on Sviazhsk Island

24 May 2009, Sunday
Peal and a public prayer in memory of Saint Equal-to-the Apostles brothers Cyril and Mefody opened celebrations dedicated to the Day of Slavic Written Language and Culture.

By tradition, events in honour of Saint Cyril and Mefody, the creators of the Slavic Written Language, were held on May 24 in all Slavic countries. The Slavic written language was created in the 9th century. The new alphabet was called Cyrillic after Byzantine Konstantin who changed his name to Cyril after having taken the vows.

Organizers of the Day of Slavic Written Language and Culture in Tatarstan are the Tatarstan Ministry of Culture, Tatarstan Museum of Fine Arts, and Tatarstan Nations Assembly.

The main event of the festival was the concert “Dialogue of cultures – way to spirituality and harmony”. The concert was prepared by the House of People’s Friendship. Performers representing Tatarstan’s national-cultural communities participated in the open-air event. Artists showed their national traditions through such performances as Georgian dancing, Russian, Byelorussian, Ukrainian songs, Cossack singing and dancing by “Krasnaya Gorka” ensemble.

The Tatarstan State Chamber Choir performed spiritual music at a charity concert.
