International Museum Day today

Today is International Museum Day. Tatarstan Vice-Premier – Minister of Culture Zilya Valeyeva addressed people of Tatarstan on this occasion.

“International Museum Day has been celebrated all over the world on May 18 since 1977. It is a professional holiday, which aims at uniting efforts of the museum community and all friends of museums in order to preserve cultural heritage. It is of particular importance for the republic of Tatarstan. Unique cultural heritage of the republic’s nations is exhibited at 13 state museums and museum-reserves, 72 municipal museums with over 1500 museum workers involved.

The first stage of implementing automated system of museum collections stocktaking has been realized in the republic in 2008. This means that museums are becoming more open to the public including each exhibit in the informational space of culture.

The International Museums Council General Assembly choose the motto “Museums and tourism” to celebrate the Museum Day in 2009. It emphasizes significance of museums for modern development of the society. The Kazan Kremlin Museum-Reserve, Bulgar Museum-Reserve, Yelabuga Museum-Reserve, the Republic of Tatarstan National Museum, art, local history, memorial museums of prominent personalities are becoming more and more recognizable culture brands. They evoke interest both of Russian people and foreign tourists.
