Kazan in 2009 to repair all Victory-related monuments

The Mayor’s Office has today discussed the preparation for the 9 May 2010 celebrations, the 65th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War victory.

The Kazan’s Mayor Metshin enhanced that all the work on capital repair and refurbishing the monuments had to be finished in 2009, in the summer. According to him, each of the city’s districts has certificates for the monuments, and all the work needs to be completed before September. “This is our common cause and a tribute to memory,” he said.

The President of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev earlier at a meeting, held by the organising committee for holding the 65th anniversary of the victory celebration, that the the military glory monuments in Tatarstan had to be made "truly sacred sites".

At present, there are 1,921 memorial structures, including 994 monuments and busts, 675 obelisks and steles, 230 memorial plaques, 22 memorial complexes and alleys of glory.

More memorial structures, purported to commemorate the Victory Day, are to be built in the Tatarstan’s capital.
