Meeting in Victory Park

13 May 2002, Monday
A meeting in memory of the heroes of the Second World War was held in Kazan on May 9. Veterans, young soldiers and students - three generations got together to pay tribute to the defenders of Fatherland. On June 22, 1941, alone 195 people went from Kazan to the front. Nobody could even think then that 135,000 residents of Kazan will go to the front and 40,000 of them will stay on the battlefields forever. From the first day of war our fellow countrymen fought the enemy and brought their worthy contribution to the Victory.

Congratulating the veterans, President of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev said that the holiday of Victory each year becomes more solemn and unites representatives of different generations. He wished all veterans to approach in good health both the millenium of Kazan and 60-anniversary of the Victory. The meeting was concluded by the minute of silence and placing flowers to the Eternal flame. The townspeople and guests took part in the holiday program: grand passage of armies of the Kazan garrison, exhibition of military engineering, brass bands parade, celebratory concert, games, competitions, attractions.
