Results of 2001 and prospects for 2002

Results of social and economic development of the Republic of Tatarstan in 2001 and prospects for 2002 were discussed at the expanded republican meeting on March 11.

Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaimiev called the meeting a beginning of realization of tasks set up in the annual Message of the RT President RT to the State Council. The current year does not promise to be easy, we should emphasize those branches which are the reserve of stability and are not dependent on market condition, said M.Shaimiev. These are mechanical engineering, small and medium business, agriculture, light and food-processing industry. The republican meeting was focused on these priority fields.

In his report, RT Prime Minister Rustam Minnikhanov totalled the results of the last year as rather positive. Thus, the total regional product increased by 5,6% and made 255,8 billion rubles by estimate. The balanced financial result of activity of large and medium enterprises of all branches was positive. The social sphere developed, with the growing number of clubs and houses of culture, medical centers, schools and preschool centers. More than one and a half million square meters of housing was commissioned. Actual monetary incomes of the population increased by 10,2%, pensions and wages are growing stably.

The conceptual strategy of social and economic development of Tatarstan for the near years is based on achievement of the level of economic self-sufficiency of citizens, their families, managing subjects, cities and areas, republics as a whole. The level of self-sufficiency will be estimated according to the system of social normalization and optimization of charges of all levels. Budgetary funds and the state subsidies to cities and areas will proceed from the normative level of social infrastructure and social services.

Summing up the meeting, the RT President emphasized that the tasks for the current year are rather tense, but the government policy will be directed at maintenance of the proper life standard of the people. This is to be supported by filling the budget, achievement of the planned volumes of manufacture, and development of the branches with big potential.
