Students should muster house

Students themselves should control both universities and dormitories. Such a wish was stated by President of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev at the opening of the refurbished student's dorm of Kazan State Medical University.

The overhaul was financed from the republican and city budgets with participation of the university. The second building is also to be reconstructed to accommodate two sports halls, student's club with, leisure and health centers.

While congratulating the newly settled students, Mintimer Shaimiev tackled on the problems of the university system. The finances from the federal budget are not used rationally. Therefore, the republic should strengthen its role in the control over the activity of universities. Rectors should consider more carefully the earnings from paid education.

As regards a separate program for reconstruction of educational institutions buildings, the President said that Tatarstan universities due to the double subordination receive maintenance finances from the Russian budget. Some objects will be reconstructed within the framework of preparation for the millenium of Kazan, while the reconstruction of Kazan State University for its 200-anniversary was already launched.
