Meeting in Kazan Kremlin

15 August 2006, Tuesday

On August 15, in the Kazan Kremlin, Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaimiev held a meeting dedicated to organization and realisation of Kazan’s application for hosting the 26th World Summer Universiade in 2011.

The meeting was attended by Head of the Directorate for Physical Culture of the Federal Agency of Physical Culture and Sport Stanislav Biryukov, RT State Council Chairman Farid Mukhametshin, RT Prime Minister, Kazan Mayor Ilsur Metshin, et al.

The Republic of Tatarstan applied to the International University Sport Federation (FISU) for hosting the 26th World Summer Universiade in 2011 in Kazan. The document was sent in the due time in English and French and includes a leaflet and a 10-minute movie. It fully answers the questionnaire about sport, transport and hotel infrastructure, security, medical provision, work of mass media and a number of other issues. Kazan will compete with 4 other cities all over the world for hosting the event.

Favourable social and economic situation of the republic, its committal to tolerance, image of the 1000-year-old Kazan connecting the East and the West, active sport development and full sporting infrastructure give the Tatarstan capital good chances to claim the victory, Mintimer Shaimiev believes.

Tatarstan President said it is a courageous project. “There are many contenders but why don’t we strive for holding such a large-scale event that can be compared with the Olympic games?”, he said. “Give us the Universiade, we’ll do the rest!”, confidently declared Mintimer Shaimiev.
