Mintimer Shaimiev took part in the World Congress of Compatriots

24 October 2006, Tuesday

October 24, Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaimiev laid flowers to Gabdulla Tukai’s monument in St. Petersburg.

The opening of the monument in June 2005 was timed to 120th anniversary of the great Tatar poet. It was Tatarstan’s gift to St. Petersburg. The place was not chosen by chance; it now stands where the Tatar sloboda (settlement) used to be.

The same day, the World Congress of Compatriots living abroad started in the Tavrichesky Palace in St. Petersburg. President Shaimiev took part in the forum.

Delegations from 80 countries have come to St. Petersburg to attend the World Congress of Compatriots.
