24 November 2007, Saturday
November 24, on the eve of Mother’s Day Mintimer Shaimiev took part in the reception at the Korston Complex that brought together almost a thousand Tatarstan mothers who bring up adopted children.
Over 1,800 orphans and children left without parents’ care appear in Tatarstan every year. So called parents of more than 50 percent of them are deprived of parental rights. The number of adopted families was very low till recently; today, it comes to a thousand.
Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaimiev addressed the guests with a welcome speech. “There is a new date on our calendar – Mother’s Day – that the country will celebrate tomorrow. Mothers always think about their children, and we should pay tribute to them”. “Regretfully, even this blessed destination of being a mother can be defected. Tens of thousands children are deprived of mother’s care. It is painful, and it is our common shortcoming”, Mintimer Shaimiev noted.
Mintimer Shaimiev said that next year, the Year of the Family, it is necessary to pay special attention and provide every kind of assistance to families that bring up adopted children. He also said that from September 1, 2008 university entrants from adopted families will enter the universities on a privileged basis, and promised to instruct the Council of university rectors on that.
