9 September 2004, Thursday
President of the Republic of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev took over the control of the situation about Nurulla mosque. Before the session of the RT State Council on September 9, he talked with the parish of the mosque, representatives of the Tatar social centre, Milli Medzhlis, Union of Moslem women, city social organisations, who organised a strike picket in the square ahead of the Parliament.

The picketers opposed demolition of the building attached to Nurulla mosque and making a complex with it, where the Moslem public library and orphanage were planned to house.

According to the press centre of Milli Midzhlis, the company, which has pretensions of owning the land, tries to destroy the building in every way so that to do away with the point at issue. Last night, the building was set on fire.

The Tatarstan President told the protesters to prepare all the necessary documents and promised to investigate the case. At the session of the RT State Council, Mintimer Shaimiev marked that “the situation is to be considered thoroughly” within two days.

Today, after the Tatarstan President’s order to investigate the situation, the building was sequestrated for the period of investigation. The decision was made by the Arbitration Court of the republic.
