At the meeting with President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin on May 12, Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaimiev reported on the course of the preparation for the celebration of Kazan’s millenium.

The President of Tatarstan marked that on the whole the works are going on according to the schedule, though they had had to make some changes – some objects will be commissioned earlier than it was planned before, while the deadline of some will be postponed to a later period. While underway is the Programme of dilapidated housing liquidation, 35 thousand families have moved to new flats, Mintimer Shaimiev said. Within the last years, Kazan has undergone greater changes than during the previous thousand years, Vladimir Putin noted with a smile.

M. Shaimiev focused on the Programme of dilapidated housing liquidation. We did not think there would be a problem of lack of time for demolishing dilapidated constructions, he said. He went on to say that there would be no housing free-of-charge after 2005. In this regard, changes in federal laws are expected in the republic, including those on the mortgage system.

Other issues of social-economic development of the region were discussed during the meeting in the Kremlin.
