IKEA now in Kazan

22 March 2004, Monday
The IKEA store was opened in Kazan that is the first project of the company expansion. It marks the beginning of a great regional IKEA program in Russia.

“Today is an important day for Kazan, because the opening of IKEA means 23.5 sq. meters of trading area, large assortment of high-quality goods and 350 highly paid vacancies,” Kazan Mayor Kamil Iskhakov said at the opening ceremony. The company representatives mentioned that Kazan was not chosen by chance, it’s also a great event in the IKEA history in Russia. The IKEA-Kazan store is like a ground stone for many future stores in Russian regions.

It is for sure now that IKEA goods will be popular with Kazan citizens. There were crowds of people willing to do shopping in the newly opened IKEA, so that RT President Mintimer Shaimiev who arrived for the opening ceremony was pleasantly surprised. “I confused those people with political demonstrators first but then realized that this stands for the fact that people admit the achievement of IKEA” he said. The President thanked the Swedish Ambassador in Russia for bringing a piece of Sweden to Tatarstan and said “Tatarstan is known as a successfully developing republic, and IKEA proves that ones again.”

Tomorrow there will be a meeting of Kazan students with IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad who arrived to take part in the opening ceremony. The meeting is believed to be an important event for the youth of Tatarstan, because IKEA is planning to set a fund of 5 million rubles to support students coming of badly off families.

Ingvar Kamprad has three children who work for IKEA as well. But he said that they also have to work hard to achieve success. Tatarstan youth will also have an opportunity to try themselves in IKEA, for Kazan will soon become the center for IKEA management training.
