Rebirth of Kizichesky monastery

9 January 2003, Thursday
January 9, President of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev visited Kizichesky Vvedensky a man's monastery located in Kazan where he met with archbishop of Kazan and Tatarstan Anastasy and governor of Kizichesky monastery archimandrite Daniil. An occasion for a meeting became discussing the details of transfer to the Kazan diocese of Russian Orthodox Church of a complex of monastery building occupied nowadays by Moscow regional military committee.

The monastery was based more than three hundred years back on that place where in 1654 the townspeople who had survived during epidemic of a plague met a religious procession from Sedmiozerny desert with wonder-working icon Sedmizeorny Smolensk Mother of God. The stone complex of a monastery whose main object of worship were relics of nine Kizichesky martyrs, occupied rather a big territory. In 1920 year the monastery was closed and ruined. Already today the military commissariat of the Moscow district of Kazan settled down here.

Architectural ensemble of Kizichesky monastery is worth both by time of construction, and by historical importance. It is really, a sacred place since it is connected not only with a memory of terrible ordeal by a plague which the city had experienced in XVII-m century, but also with those remarkable people, embodying themselves in a history of Kazan, who were buried here. To return to life this unique place not only for Tatarstan, but also for all Russia is possible only together, under active support not only of patrons of art, but also a leadership of the republic, President noted.
