UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova congratulates citizens of Tatarstan on “Izge Bolgar zhyeny” holiday

14 June 2015, Sunday
On June 14, in her message voiced at solemn opening of “Izge Bolgar zhyeny” holiday in Bolgar (the Republic of Tatarstan), UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova congratulated citizens of Tatarstan on an important event dedicated to official adoption of Islam in Volga Bulgaria.

“The historical meaning of voluntary adoption of Islam, a very important event for Tatarstan and a lot of people from other regions, attracts pilgrims to the ancient land of Bolgar, a bright symbol of history, culture and faith. For many centuries Bolgar has been a sacred place for Muslims of Russia and the whole world. It has become a bridge to tolerance and consolidation of inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue. This year celebrations are held in Bolgar for the first time after recognition of the universal value, religious and spiritual significance of Bolgar historical and archeological complex by UNESCO and its inclusion in the World Heritage List. This message is very important in terms of International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2013-2022).

The inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue is becoming more important. Often we hear speeches full of stereotypes and appealing to hatred or see how religion faces results of ignorance and conflict. We cannot admit this and must continue striving for tolerance.”
