Mintimer Shaimiev says USA aggression against Iraq has several strategic objectives
7 April 2003, Monday
Tatarstan leader Mintimer Shaimiev believes the USA military action against Iraq has far-reaching strategic objectives.
In his interview with Interfax M.Shaimiev said that establishing of a pro-American government in Iraq will allow the United States to further strengthen its influence not only on the Arabian world, but also on the European market.
"This will also result in additional levers of pressure excercised by the USA upon Russia. Taking into account that domestic economy is a raw economy, with the control of Iraqi oil, Washington will be able to influence the world oil market conjuncture and directly determine the production levels in the countries - exporters", M.Shaimiev emphasized.
Thus, in his opinion, having conquered Iraq, the USA will solve several global problems proceeding mostly from its own interests.
Analyzing the situation, the Tatarstan leader marked that the USA policy causes ever-increasing aversion in the Muslim world and such a position may one day result in new destructive acts of terrorism and a burst of Islamic extremism.
"With its influence, the USA virtually managed to force a wedge into relations of some Islamic states, having divided them into allies and opponents. The Iraqi events have an unfavorable influence on rapproachement of positions within the CIS states. Perhaps, it is another strategic objectives of Washington", M.Shaimiev said.
He also marked another, more latent aspect of the USA actions: "Though these actions are reasoned by the struggle against international terrorism, but its source, I think, is the American capital which is searching for ways of further growth and increase of efficiency".
"However in the Iraqi case the American capital - the most powerful in the world - has shown its true aggressive look. And according to the objectives of the American capital, it turns out that the end justifies the means".
In his opinion, with regard to strategy the Russian party should hardly expect optimistic forecasts concerning its participation and integration into the post-war economy of Iraq. "The capital does not like to share without benefits", M.Shaimiev said.
As he said, Russia should become a self-sufficient country in every respect though it will not be easy.
"But we should aspire it. Geopolitic position of our country obliges us to be strong", the Tatarstan leader declared.
From the American continent, he said, the influence is spreading to Europe and the Arabian world, simultaneously the Chinese influence is growing. "And Russia will always stay between these two world polarities", M.Shaimiev concluded.
