The most optimistic forecasts proved to be correct, Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaimiev said at the briefing on December 8 dedicated to results of the elections to the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

The transfer of the Kazan Holy Virgin Icon to Russia could become a fine occasion for a very necessary and, as a matter of fact, inevitable dialogue between two largest confessions - Orthodox and Catholic, M.Shaimiev told Interfax on May 12. He emphasized that the Icon is highly respected in the Orthodox world and the largest Orthodox cathedrals in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and other cities of Russia were constructed in its honor.

The announcement of jihad in connection with the USA military action against Iraq declared by head of the Central religious board of Muslims of Russia Talgat Tajuddin leads to cleavage among the Russian Muslims, M.Shaimiev declared on Friday in the interview with Interfax.
"I know the awareness and alarm of the Tatarstan Muslims and Muslims of nearby regions in connection with the situation in Iraq and I am sure that among them there was no appeals to jihad or to other extreme measures".

Tatarstan leader Mintimer Shaimiev believes the USA military action against Iraq has far-reaching strategic objectives.
In his interview with Interfax M.Shaimiev said that establishing of a pro-American government in Iraq will allow the United States to further strengthen its influence not only on the Arabian world, but also on the European market.
