The Russian KAMAZ-Master crew led by Firdaus Kabirov has become second in the Dakar 2009 Series & Raids. In the special second stage of the marathon Kabirov came second with only Dutchman Gérard De Rooy in front on January 4.
In 2008, RT poultry farmers achieved record levels. According to the RT Ministry of Agriculture and Foodstuffs, for the first time in the republic more than 106 thousand tons of poultry meat (145 per cent to the level of last year) was produced in all categories of farms.
Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto will open the 27th Shalyapin International Opera Festival which will be held in Kazan from 7 to 20 February.

December 31, President of the Republic of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaymiev congratulated the people of Tatarstan on New Year.
Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaimiev met with the newly elected rectors of the universities of the republic in the Kazan Kremlin. Among the guests were the new rector of the Kazan State University of Architecture and Construction R.Nizamov, the rector of the Elabuga State Pedagogical University A.Kalimullin, and the rector of the Kazan State Medical University A. Sozinov.

December 29, Prospekt Pobedy metro station was opened in Kazan. Mintimer Shaimiev, the President of the Republic of Tatarstan, took part in the opening ceremony.

December 26, the enlarged meeting on the implementation in Tatarstan the Federal Law of July 6, 2007 185-FZ On the Fund for Assistance to Reform of Housing and Communal Services and the issues of construction and housing in 2008 was held in the House of RT Government. The President of the Republic of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev and the General Director of the State Corporation " Fund for Assistance to Reform of Housing and Communal Services " Konstantin Tsitsin took part in the meeting.
