January 30, President of the Republic of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev congratulated an academician of Russian Academy of Science and Honored Member of Tatarstan Academy of Science, chief scientific associate of the Institute of Space Research and head of the largest Russian scientific school on problems of astrophysics of high energies, Rashid Syunyaev on receiving the international scientific prize - King Faisal Award.
250 copies of the book “To father with love” were given to the Tatarstan National Library. They are the present of Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaimiev to the largest library of the republic.

The World Economic Forum’s founder Klaus Schwab will in June 2009 visit the Tatarstan’s capital Kazan. The Prime Minister of Tatarstan Roustam Minnikhanov and Klaus Schwab agreed on it at a meeting on 28 January in Davos.
Mintimer Shaimiev congratulated Kirill, Metropolitan of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, on his election of Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia.

International theoretical and practical symposium “Islamic studies in modern Russia and CIS: progress, problems, prospect” will take place in the Centre of Eurasian and international researches of Kazan State University.
One more twin city of Elabuga (along with Alexin of Tula region) has appeared - Turkish city Safranbolu. Agreement on establishment of twin cities ties was signed in Elabuga by the government prosecutor Ilshat Gafurov and deputy government prosecutor of Safranbolu Jalchyn Ozjorek.

It became known in the beginning of December 2008 that Russia and India concluded delivery contract of 80 military-transport helicopters Мi-17В-5. But it wasn’t clear who would execute an order Kazan helicopter plant or Ulan – Ude aircraft plant. Today is clear that the contract will be executed in Kazan. The talks of the President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev and the prime minister of India Manmocham Singcha resulted in the conclusion of contract.
