The ways for development of the oil industry were discussed on July 2 in Yelabuga. President of Tatarstan Mintimer Shaimiev held a meeting with leaders of oil companies and heads of administrations of Tatarstan oil districts.
Tatarstan President M.Shaimiev does not support the importation of nuclear waste to Russia and thinks that the Federation Council should consider the law on importation of nuclear waste "without fail". "Deciding such a key problem, we necessarily have to consider an opinion of the upper chamber," he told the Interfax. "This is my civil position and I consider waste only as waste with all the implications." Member of the Federation Council, Tatarstan State Council Chairman Farid Mukhametshin also expressed his view. He reminded that the Tatarstan parliament and other authorities were against this law and sent their appeal to the Russian President, Government and both chambers of the Federal Assembly.
The Russian President V.Putin's Decree of May 26 set up a commission to work out proposals on differentiation of authorities between federal, regional and local governments. Head of the commission D.Kozak informed that it would consist of 22 persons, including Tatarstan President M.Shaimiev. By June 1, 2002 the commission must submit its proposals on reforming federal structure to the Russian President.

June 10, President of Russia Vladimir Putin has arrived in capital city of Bashkortostan Ufa where the national holiday Sabantuy was held. June 8, the international symposium "Islamic culture in Volga - Ural region" has opened in Kazan. Well-known scholars - historians and orientalists from Russia and 11 countries of the world, representatives of public organizations and religious faiths have got together for participation in the event.
